Pain, is it Equal for both Sexes?
Han Hee-Chul

Abstract
From the viewpoint of sociology, men and women are different from each other. But in the biological viewpoint, they have a lot of things in common as human being. Except sex-specific characteristics, men and women show similar responses to general stimuli, e.g. light, sound, touch etc. How about pain? Is it equal for both sexes? To obtain answer to this question, I studied several review articles to find out the differences between both sexes in pain perception. In summary, women are definitely different from men in epidemiology and sex prevalence of painful diseases. Furthermore, psychophysical and therapeutic studies have indicated clear differences between men and women. Therefore, IASP(International Association for the Study of Pain) launched the "Real Women, Real Pain" campaign to draw attention to the pain in women in 2007. And SIG(Special Interest Group) on Sex, Gender and Pain worked to publish the consensus report based on the Core Curriculum for Professional Education in Pain from IASP. By continuing to publish 19 Fact sheets during the global year against pain in women, IASP devoted to help reduce the pain and suffering of women worldwide. I hope that the explosive increase in the number of research articles about sex, gender and pain will show the way by which women in pain can be treated appropriately as real women in the future.
